NHS Continuing Healthcare vs NHS-funded nursing care
The difference between NHS Continuing Healthcare and NHS-funded nursing care.
Updated June 2026. NHS Continuing Healthcare and NHS-funded nursing care are often confused, but they are not the same thing.
Quick answer: NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund a wider care package for eligible people. NHS-funded nursing care is a nursing contribution paid to a nursing home.
NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund a wider package of care for someone with a primary health need. NHS-funded nursing care, often called FNC, is a contribution paid by the NHS towards registered nursing care in a nursing home.
What is NHS Continuing Healthcare?
If someone is eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, the NHS is responsible for arranging and funding the package of care needed to meet their assessed health and associated social care needs.

What is NHS-funded nursing care?
NHS-funded nursing care applies where a person is not eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare but has been assessed as needing care from a registered nurse in a nursing home.
For England, from 1 April 2026 the standard weekly rate is £267.68 and the higher weekly rate is £368.24. The payment is usually made directly to the nursing home.
Why the difference matters
CHC and FNC can have very different financial effects. CHC may cover the assessed care package, while FNC is a nursing contribution.
The NHS should consider whether someone is eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare before deciding that NHS-funded nursing care is the right route.
What should families do?
Start by understanding the terms being used. If someone has been told they may receive FNC, it is reasonable to understand how CHC was considered and what assessment took place.
Process lesson
Funding terminology can change the whole route. CHC, FNC, social care funding and self-funding are different concepts, so families should be clear which one is being discussed.
Quick FAQ
Is FNC the same as CHC?
No. FNC is a nursing contribution; CHC can cover a wider assessed care package for eligible people.
Who receives NHS-funded nursing care payments?
FNC is usually paid directly to the nursing home.
